People who get into AI art usually follow a similar path: start with one-click web generators, learn prompt techniques, then install Stable Diffusion WebUI to tinker with parameters. But those who go deep almost all end up installing ComfyUI eventually. 111K stars don’t happen for no reason.
What This Project Is
ComfyUI is a node-based graphical interface for diffusion models, written in Python. Its core idea: break the entire AI image generation pipeline — loading models, encoding prompts, sampling, upscaling, post-processing — into individual nodes that you wire together into workflows.
Compared to AUTOMATIC1111’s WebUI with its “fill out a form” approach, ComfyUI is more like building a circuit board. The learning curve is steeper, but the ceiling is much higher.
Why Veterans All Use It
Complete control over the generation process. In WebUI you adjust parameters; in ComfyUI you reshape the pipeline itself. Generate at low resolution, refine specific areas with a second model, then upscale — multi-stage flows like this are painful in WebUI but just a few wires in ComfyUI.
Workflows are saveable and shareable. Your entire flow is a JSON file you can share directly. Experts online share their workflows constantly — download one, drag it into the interface, and it works. Workflow data even embeds inside the generated images themselves.

I installed via pip:

Honestly, the first launch is disorienting — an empty canvas with no obvious “type prompt, click generate” button. My advice for newcomers: install ComfyUI Manager, drag in a shared workflow someone else built, get it running first, then slowly learn what each node does. After a week, you probably won’t go back.
